Help SD card notshowing on the phone

Hi freinds,
My HTC Desire HD phone has just lost all the pictures it had in memory of my 7 month old son. The Error message says "Pls. insert an SD card". I have taken out & reinserted the card & restarted the phone a few time , but it still cannot read the card. Pls. assist as I have a lot of pictures & videos of my son since he was born.

Do you have a card reader you can use to see if the card is readable on another PC or can you try it in another phone?
