My Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc suddenly refused to take photos today, and various apps would not run. It seems the phone no longer recognises its SD card. I have tried removing and reinserting the card and restarting the phone a few times but it either says there is no SD card, or the sd card is not mounted.

I removed the sd card and inserted it into my Hudl tablet to see if that could read it. It said checking sd card for errors, and eventually said the sd card was blank or had an unrecognised format and offered to format it which I declined.

Is the sd card likely to be broken, or could the phone have corrupted it? Is it worth trying to reformat the card (the phone does not offer to do that but maybe there is a formatting tool in its menu somewhere).

If I have to buy a new sd card, what type and size should I be looking for?

    1) The phone has to be started in recovery to format the card.

    2) Let the Hudl format it.

    3) It's worth trying since, at this point, the card is useless, and it costs nothing to format it.

    4) It could have been corrupted by the phone or it could have reached the end of its life. SD cards have a limited (large but limited) number of write cycles.

    5) Class 10, anything up to 32GB. I always recommend San Disk.

Thanks. Told the Hudl to format it, not sure what it is supposed to display but there was no progress message or anything, just the status message saying (as before) that the sd card was blank or unrecognised format. Put it back in the phone and it was the same as before - camera said "no memory card".

So I guess it means the card is end-of-life. Will look for a new one asap.

When I insert a new sd card, do I have to do anything or will it just start using it automatically? What do I do about apps that I had installed to the sd card - do I just go to the Play store and try to install them again?
