Is there some trick to getting a nonrooted phone to save all photos, videos, screenshots, etc. to SD card by default? I mean a ZTE Z987 or Z813.

For videos and pictures, check if your camera app has a setting to set default storage to SD card. All my Samsungs had that feature. Not sure for other brands.

OK, thanks, I found it listed under the "gear" at upper left. I wish I had known about that sooner. Now how do I make it retroactive, for not just camera but also screenshots, screensavers, etc.? How do I move what's already in the wrong place?

Any file manager app will allow you to do that. There may be one pre-installed on ZTE devices; if not then the free version of File Commander (or a similar app) should work.
