Hi, so after doing some research, it seems that the only way I would upgrade to the EVO 3D is if I sell my current EVO 4G and use the money to pay for the 3D (free upgrade). I have a few questions about how to go about this though:

1. If I sell my current EVO 4G (say, on ebay), would I get more money for a rooted phone or a unrooted one?

2. My current phone is rooted, so what exactly would I need to do before I sell it? Unroot? Factory reset? Leave things the way they are...?

I'm leaning towards selling + upgrading but I want to make sure I'm making the right decisions here.......

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I'm in the same boat.

I'm going to advertise it as rooted; I believe a rooted phone does command a higher price, though it's hard to quantify how much. If anything, it may make your listing stand out over all the other Evos.

I'll probably flash to a rooted stock ROM and do a factory data reset, so it will look unmodified in case buyer wants to take the phone to Sprint to make sure the ESN/MEID is clean. If they don't care to check, then I'm open to pre-flashing any ROM of their choice before the sale.

I'd say look at the listings too, but in my opinion, and I *assume* this is true for most people, I'd just want a clean phone that has out-of-the-box settings. I don't want to deal with what someone else has messed with.

You can find guides on how to unroot and factory reset in the evo subforum.

p.s. I thought this thread was about you finding someone that was willing to sell you advice on phones... I was going to come in here and say naw man, this is androidforums, we'll give you advice for free!

In my experience rooted phones with a CM 7.0 ROM fetches more money. That's because a lot of people are afraid to do the work themselves, and they'd pay more for a phone that's been rooted / ROM'ed already.

i agree with novoxx77. i would keep it rooted and flash a stock rom.

Although you will not get as much, there are 2 other easy ways to get rid of the EVO. One is gazelle.com. They are currently offering 138.00. One month ago they were offering 231.00. I locked in my offer last week at 162.00 which is good for 30 days.

The other is the Sprint buyback program at https://secure2.sprintbuyback.com/consumer/

They are offering 150.00 which is a direct discount from the new phone purchase which will also save you the local sales tax on that amount. Their offer is good for 45 days.

I have not decided which of the 2 ways I am going to use yet but in either way I'm in the profit as I only paid 100.00 for my EVO at launch last June.

I would use Craigslist personally. Give the buyer options. Tell them they can get it Stock Unrooted, or rooted with any ROM of their choice including (name some cool ones). People like choices. That's what I did with my iPhone (jailbroken and unlocked as an option) when I sold it to buy my Evo. I met them at a police station to make the sale and it went super well.

I thought you were selling advice! Lol. That would be kinda sheisty, we give away advice here! I know I would sure pay more for a rooted phone, rooting takes work, and risk of losing money (bricking your expensive phone). So if someone does the work for me, of course they should get paid extra for their efforts.
