I sold my old phone and no one ever asked for my ESN. If they want to verify it's clean, meet up with them, and have them check while you are present. Not too sure what they can do with it if they don't have the phone, but one never knows these days. (Clone it, perhaps?)

Meet up with them at a verizon store. They can get it transfered with you right next to them with the money in hand.

all they want to do is call verizon and verify its not a stolen phone, if its a stolen esn then it can never be activated and they would be out the cash
