The Gmail email "pushes" email to the phone without any request necessary from the phone. The regular email from Sprint/HTC/Android does not (I believe).

Yep, the gmail app automatically pushes email to the phone. You can do 2 things, turn off notifications and check whenever you want. or turn off sync, and sync whenever you want.

If you are using the standard mail app, theres a setting to change the polling.

You can cancel or remove Gmail.

Most consider the push situation an enormous plus. It saves battery life and you get email instantly.
