I was told that amoled displays have no problem (and doesn't take much energy) to show for example the time even when the phone is on stanbdy.

Would be pretty cool to have all black screen and just the time in white when the phone is on standby.

Is there something that does that already?

Does it just dim the display or lights up just the pixels needed when the rest of the display is off?

A little of both. The screen is black and the number lights get dimmer with time. I only used it once and I had it charging that night cause I did not want to wake up to a dead battery.

I use Alarm Clock Plus. It dims the display.

    I wish ....

I saw this on my friend's Nokia N8 and asked the same question. Trouble is when an Android screen is 'OFF', it is off in the sense there is no power to it. I have Android 2.3.5 with the ring-pull lock screen which I've set to display a clock when I press the power button.

I have seen a mention on another thread of an app that will disable the screen turning off when just the power button is pressed which means the clock is always visible. Just have a black background. The battery may not like it though .....

This totally correct, moreover apps which do not let the phone go into sleep correctly consume quite a bit of battery. To display and update correctly the clock the phone will be kept awake.
