When I get on a public Wifi like starbux, that requires a browser based signin, instead of bringing up the web page in chrome that has the "Click to Accept Connection" button, it goes to https://www.google.com which then displays "Your conection is not private" and will not proceed past that point.

This started happening in a few places, but now it seems that every public wifi leads to this experience. Any ideas?

I cleared all my history/cache/cookies and it seemed to fix this. Can anyone say what the cause is?

Lots of VPN choices out there, but the one I chose was

    www.purevpn.com

they are the World's fastest VPN service, and I believe it.... I am on my 2nd year of renewal.

if I use any WiFi in a public spot, I turn on PureVPN 1st, before I login to anything that requires a password.

if all I want is the news or the weather, eh.... just look at it. no passwords being sent out.

This is not a VPN question. I have a vpn I use, but i need a fix for my problem before I can connect with it.

    oops, misread that.

like in hotels, bring up chrome or whatever,
type in Google.com or select it from a bookmark.... this forces the browser to try to go find it....

that alerts the hotel's WiFi manager to redirect you to a login in screen.
I just enter the username and room number: usually....

once that is done, you should stay logged in for 24 hours.

I can't understand why anything else should be happening.

just for grins, try AdBlock browser to see what happens?

Yes, what you describe is what's supposed to happen. Instead of being redirected to the page with the "Accept... terms" button, I am directed to https://www.gooogle.com with the "Connection is not private" message. This is probably because I have not logged in to the router that is controlling access to the network/internet.

I sometimes get around it by bookmarking that said page, and when I get sent to google, I click on my bookmark. I also get around it by going to www.bbc.com because it does not use https security certificate. So I have work arounds, but what in my system is forcing me to google and not allowing the proper redirect? I don't see anything in my browser settings that would affect this.

Also, this happens on my laptop as well (running Linux). I have Adblock Plus in both Chrome and Firefox.

My laptop is also on Linux, and I have had to run thru some gyrations to get to the web....
at times, I never knew what it was that got me thru....

I usually just hit bookmarks, and kept trying until something gave up, and let me in.

So it's happening on any public WiFi and both your phone and laptop? Do you have any kind of possibly over zealous security or firewall software installed in both the phone and laptop that might be blocking access?

Another thing that can certainly mess with HTTPS and stop it connecting, is the date and time correct on the devices?
