Signal Strength

I live in an area that usually has pretty good signal strength. However, I've noticed that different phones can have different amounts of signal in the same spot on verizon. Is there any way to tell how well the Incredible will be at receiving signal? Do different phones exert more into finding a signal? What may cause this?
