Help Significant battery drain Post JB

Hi all,

Using the One XL, Telstra, AU.

Stock as a rock, not rooted, no custom launchers etc etc.

Had the JB update pushed OTA 24-12-12 by Telstra.

Since the update, huge decrease in battery life.

Previously, phone would come off charge around 7am, and be sitting between 40-60% around 6pm.

After update - no change of usage, no new apps - it's practically dead by 6pm.

Still running Juice Defender in Extreme mode - manually allowing 3G/4G/WiFi networks when required.

A dozen other people I know are experiencing similar drains.

Other threads have mentioned battery life has improved?

If anyone could shed some light would be appreciated.

Mate, I have had major problems with Juice Defender on Jelly Bean whereas it worked fine on ICS. I am not sure why, but it drained my battery faster than ever. What I did was I removed Juice Defender and then fixed permissions (but that requies Clockwork Recovery, I believe, which of course you don't have).

So anyway, just remove Juice Defender and let the new OS settle for a couple of days without it.
 
Another possible issue some people have reported is with Google Now. I believe some members have reported that having it on has caused significant battery issues. If removing JD does not improve battery life (I would recommend you do that first- multiple members, including Tarek above, have also reported that JD has been causing battery drain issues) I would try turning off google now.

I see you have the XL model (with LTE and the S4, correct?). For Tegra 3 models, HTC is pushing out a supplementary update that seems to be helping with battery life on those handsets. Since you have the S4 model, however, we are not sure if HTC is giving us (I also have one) a supplementary update, or if we even need one.

It was google now with me, I wiped my phone after installing update as a few apps weren't working so wanted a clean slate.. was still only getting around 6hrs until I disabled google now and hotmail from syncing.. now I get a full day again.

The smaller update a few days later has given me a little bit more battery life and tightened things up, I'm not getting as much as I was with ICS but still getting a full day which is all I need and worth it for that extra smoothness and the camera changes.
 
I installed the HTC update before updating to jellybean and thankfully haven't had some of the issues others have had. In the last week though I have noticed an extra drain on battery too. Didn't occur to me that it may be Google now as it doesn't seem to do much on my phone other than tell me how long it'll take me to get home from work. Turned it off now too so will report back if I notice a difference or not.

Exactly the same here with my One X. I'm also going to turn Google now off also and see if it helps.
 
Not sure if this is significant, but I can't ser how these 3 processes are using ^80% of the processing power either :p

the task manager refers to RAM, not processing power. And android task managers (at least, on non-stock android) are notorious for not noting everything that is using RAM. For example, you'll never see anything related to sense show up, yet you know sense must be using RAM, especially if you're using the sense lock screen and sense launcher. However, if you use a third-party alternative like apex or nova, that will show up as using RAM)

I would hit refresh to see if more programs show up.

Google now is a new search option added to google search. To access it, try holding down the capacitive home button. Many users have reported this to be a huge power drain, due to it (supposedly) trying to determine the users location constantly.

Google now looks something like the following:

Thanks for the explanation of Google Now, makes much more sense.

Thank you also for the break down about the processing power - I don't quite understand it all, but I'm beginning to.

As an update, today was my 2nd full day of basic JB, power saver on but no Juice Defender.

I must say, DRASTIC improvement. Where normally (9.15pm) I'd be scrounging around for my charger, I'm sitting on a cool 46% - quite possibly the best performance I've had out of my One XL yet!

Following a few other threads over on XDA, last night I uninstalled apps I didn't use more than a few times per month, under the premise that some may not be optimised correctly for JB.

Whatever it was that happened, I'm now one happy camper :D

Hi,

My battery has also been alot worse since I installed JB,
I dont have Juice Defender and never have had,

I thought it might be Google now as I had this turned on after the update but I turned it off about a week ago now and have seen very little battery life improvement.

I have done afew soft resets with no effect,

I have also gone through my phone and deleted all of the apps that I no longer use.

I have also done a battery test which came back as a 97% Pass

I am contemplating doing a hard reset as I read the sticky thread that said that this might solve the problem,

Is there anything else I should be trying first?
And has anyone thats had bad battery life post JB actually done a Factory reset and Improved the battery life?

p.s My phone is a HTC_001 and is not rooted and i have installed the smaller update that came after JB which also had very little or No effect.
 
Since my branded Orange UK handset was updated to Jellybean on Boxing Day the battery life has been phenomenal - rather than charging it every 1-2 days the frequency has now changed to, well, since Boxing Day I've charged it once (27th December) and I'm still on 39% now.

My usage is pretty light but is unchanged since the update. I switch the phone off when I go to bed at night, and when it is switched on I keep things turned off (Bluetooth, wifi, 3G, GPS) unless I want to use them. I don't play games on it, nor do I listen to music, and I obviously have it set to sync manually. I make calls, I send lots of texts, I have Google Now configured and I've used it a few times (I love it on my Nexus 7), yet the battery life seems to have at least doubled, maybe trebled for me since the update. I did a full reset after the installation - I always do. I've no complaints at all.
 
No joy for me. Turned off Google now for about a week now and no improvement in battery. Quite frustrated with recent phone performance dont know if due to jelly bean or the HTC update though.

Did you do a factory reset after the update?
 
I had to do a hard reset soon after installing JB after messing about with Accessibility mode, and losing touch control.

Since then, initially, the power consumption seemed a lot worse. I tried turning power saver mode on and off, but didn't really notice any difference. For a week or so, it now seems nearly as good as it was before JB (easily does the whole day, or two of light use turned off at night). I wonder if one of the app updates sorted something? The improvement seemed to coincide roughly with the People app update, but there have been others. I didn't notice any excessive app in the power usage chart, but People probably comes under Android or Sense?
 
My battery drain was awful post JB update but has really improved since I did the people app update, I would even say it's maybe a little better than before JB now.
 
I've done two factory resets, but there is still no difference in battery life. Any idea on what I should try next? And how do you do a soft reset?
