Is there an app that will put the phone in silent mode for all incoming calls except for certain numbers of your choosing?

You would have to search for a Call Filter app type.

The simplest way is to make a silent ringtone, set it as default and then put custom ringtones on the ones you want to hear...unless there is and app for that.

I don't want to permanently silent them though. Only when I'm sleeping or something, and there are only certain numbers I would want to ring through and wake me up.

If this is for sleeping then I can recommend Bedside. It has a function of filtering calls and letting through only those you want.

Tasker can do this... and so much more. You can download direct from the developer's site and get a 7 day trial for free. If you like it, you can buy direct as well, or uninstall it and download it from the Market. (I would recommend downloading it from the Market to start with, but the inherent refund period in the Market is not really long enough to evaluate Tasker. That, and the direct purchase version is slightly cheaper.)

Setting up what you mentioned above would be fairly easy in Tasker, though maybe not so much for a beginner. But there are plenty of people around to help you out.

I write about technology for Maximum PC and Tested

You can also use Locale. It lets you set different callers as a condition. So you can set it to turn the ringer volume up if certain numbers call. This can be limited to specific times of day too.

Check out "silence them" app. It does exactly this... you can select certain contacts and also select a time period you want their calls and sms to auto silence... Pretty cool :)

    this may already be suggested:
    1. create a silent ringtone with ringdroid
    2. assign it as the default ringtone for the device
    3. assign specific audible ringtones to contacts you want an audible ringtone to play for.
