Hello everyone,
I am new to to this, have searched the forum but did not find a satisfying answer. So please don't kill me if there is somewhere a 482 page long thread about this....

Like I said I am new to the LG OptimusV with the $25.00 Beyond Talk plan.
I would love to use the Skype App to call back home to Germany.
To do this is it using data (which is unlimited) or does it use minutes?
Or do I have to "somehow" connect it over WiFi?

I am thankful for any help

Skype uses data or wifi...no minutes.

Skype uses data, but I'll defer to other users as to how well it works when using 3G...most of the reports I've read suggest there's a lot of lag unless you're on wifi.

Off topic but if you use google voice for outgoing calls overseas it is quite seamless. I used it a year ago to call greece a lot and it worked out very well for me. It does use your voice minutes as well as the listed charges from google though. Google charges about the same as Skype.

Something to keep in mind if Skype doesn't work out for whatever reasons.

In the U.S. skype to skype calls via a mobile device must be done over a wifi connection.
If you attempt to call someone using the 3G data connection, your skype call will fail.

I'm having the opposite problem, using Samsung Fascinate on Verizon Skype will only work with 3G. If I have wifi on it will make me turn that off first before Skype will work. Is there a way around this? I'd like to use it when I'm overseas and only have wifi available to me there.

On Verizon devices, Skype will only work via 3G and uses your voice minutes.
On all other carrier's devices, Skype will only work over Wifi and in no other way.

how do we know that with Verizon skype uses minutes? i'm not saying anyone is wrong, i'm just wondering if it's on verizon's site somewhere. i had wanted to use their data/msg only plan and use the cheapest skype plan for calls since i have very few calls each month and $40 for voice alone is pretty steep when i hardly use it.

Not all other devices. Only those who are in America are blocked from using skype over 3G. I might add that if you're able to get other versions, you can use voice over 3G.

I have 2 versions of Skype... I have a Skype Lite that uses voice minutes by calling into a Skype server and I have the reugular Skype that uses data.
