Official version of skype is now available for download on the market, can be used over wifi & 3g.
Been playing with it for last hour... works OK so far on unbranded 02 2.2 Desire UK
Good to hear, am i right in thinking you can only exit it by going into "Running Services" & shutting it down that way?
Not had much of a chance to mess with it so far so i might be missing something obvious.
You can kill it by looking at your profile and changing the status to signed out.
That at least gets rid of the notification item, so I assume that kills the process as much as you need
Thanks jsbombjack, appreciated.
Great news at last, but a 14mb programme!!!
It must be SD'able!!
Just a heads up that for some reason this cannot be used over 3G in USA. I imagine this is the operators being ******ed.
In the rest of the world it apparently works fine over both Wifi and 3G, though I haven't tried making any calls yet.
doesnt seem to allow users to sign in when using a Galaxy S in the UK over wifi
It says Galaxy S isn't supported.
It needs to be moved to the SD card before I'll try it out.
I was looking here that Skypes now available to all android phones....great.
But then I'm reading that its not available for 3g use and some saying it is. I dont get good reception where I live though. Can someone confirm the 3G use?
Skype App Finally in Android Market … For All Users ---> Says that 3G works. Then Engadget say its not available.
Skype app arrives in Android Market, WiFi-only in the US -- Engadget
Great news! And long overdue.... Wifi skype is all I really need...
Just a question - Is it possible to manually add a sip setting in the Android version of Skype? I don't use SkypeOut.
I'm currently using Numbuzz as a client for making SIP calls and I was wondering if Skype offers the feature to manually define a 3rd-part SIP setting.
really needs movetoSD, stupid only being able to use wireless in usa tho it needs sorting
Works perfect on my Galaxy S, JPK/Froyo firmware seems to be the key there...
Seems good but can't find skype out credit....
User interface quite nice though.
Works over wifi for me in UK. Its USA that's wifi only.
confirmed it works over bluetooth also!
Skype now available for all Android devices, Wi-Fi only in U.S. Boy Genius Report
Skype for Android? Now Available - About Skype
Apparently Skype for Android is available only through wi-fi in the US, however the current Skype that I have on my Incredible does not work on wi-fi, only on 3G. Will the current install of Skype continue to be supported and work on 3G? I would like to be able to use Skype when I'm on the go.
According to the link you posted here --> Skype for Android? Now Available - About Skype
Skype for Android enables users to:
Make free Skype-to-Skype calls over WiFi or mobile data connection (GPRS, EDGE, 3G)* to other Skype users anywhere in the world using Skype
In AppBrain, it is listed as a new "Hot" app here --> Skype - Android app on AppBrain
Have it, works over 3G, talked to friend in Russia via Skype to Skype. This was on Sunday, October 3rd. Not certain of if there is a newer version which does not permit Skype to Skype over 3G.
Never used Skype, I gotta see how skype-skype works.
Sorry kind of ranting. This is my own opinion. I'm just full of piss and vinegar today.
Skype was so much better than they were just pushing it as a service to allow free phone calls over the internet.
I'm pretty sure they were trying to sell access to the service just through carriers to generate more money. My carrier offers skype, BUT only if it is installed and run through their 3G data network.
Seriously, and now they finally release it probably because people are realizing what a bunch of assholes they've been about this.
As a non American Galaxy S user I still feel really cheated.
- People have been complaining about the size of the program, but the Galaxy S has so much space it can handle the size.
- It doesn't support the Galaxy S. One of the latest phones with a ton of variants on multiple carriers internationally. I'm pretty sure there's a good number of SGS users out there.
- It doesn't allow calls over wifi, outside the US? This is really don't get. Are they breaking some law by letting people make those free international calls? Skype never had any guarantee on call quality, so issues pertaining to quality isn't really related to them.
I'm just very disappointed by this release.
I will say, that I have to agree with tempest. I dont like the app, nor the regular program. Dont force crappy bloatware on to my phone. It was one of the first programs to go when i rooted, that and CityID.
I understand the appeal for making video calls and use it frequently from my PC to stay in touch with family & friends. I don't quite get the phone call thing though.
I have a vzw Family plan which includes free calls to 10 F&F. I also get free calls to other vzw phones - specifically my wife's. Those 2 features account for about 80% of our calls and the required minimum plans to get them allow us more than enough (too many) minutes to handle the other 20% of the calls. I realize mine is a specific case but it can't be too much different than a lot of families. I just don't see much value in all these Skype variants popping up.
Maybe someone can give me an idea of where they find value.
