Root Slight irritations

There are a few apps that seem to always start and run even when I do NOT use them regularly. They're always there when I go to system panel, and each are taking up 10-15 megs of available memory. I'm just not sure what is starting them when the device is sitting idle, or why they're starting or running in the background when the device is totally idle.
Here's the list of "repeat offenders":
Gmail
Maps
My Uploads
Voice Search
Calendar Storage
Media Container Service
Market
Gallery
Facebook
Any ideas or known reasons why these items start and run? Nothing is set to automatically sync, and none of these apps are being started my myself.

Just because they are running doesn't mean you are losing anything. Android isn't windows and has a different way of managing memory. Once you need more memory to open something, the native task manager will kill off enough to get that task running. They aren't hurting anything, leave them alone.

I've seen things running at startup that after the phone is on for a bit, will not be running. I don't recall reading what version of the OS you're on, but I've noticed that Froyo seems to be handling memory a bit better than 2.1 did.

Just let the phone run and let it do it's thing.

I understand that they're not hurting anything, and that the native task manager will handle memory needs as apps need memory. But, (and I very well may be wrong about this) if an item is running does it not consume CPU cycles? If this is the case, then logic says that the CPU will be under more load, and will not throttle down as quickly, or as much to conserve battery. I'm just a stickler for minute details, and if this is the case, then even the slightest load that's not necessary will discharge the battery at a faster rate.
Thoughts?

Gmail is waiting for new emails to alert you,
Why? Sync and notifications are disabled. If I want to check my Gmail on my phone-I start the app and wait for it to sync at that time.
market is waiting for updates, facebook is waiting for updates
Why? Market will update itself and/or check on updates for my apps when I open the market application. Facebook has updates and notifications both turned off. IMO-same situation as Gmail..I'll wait for it to update when I start the application.
