I finally found an app that allows Galaxy Tab users to send SMS over wifi! It's called HeyWire and it's totally free. It will even allow those that use their Tab 3g to send and receive SMS for free. So for those paying extra per month for a carrier messaging package could essentially ditch their messaging package and go with HeyWire. The UI isn't the greatest but it does do exactly what its suppose to do.

I've been using Google Voice SMS for that purpose. I like how it keeps a copy of all messages online in the mail app so I never lose a message.

Heywire since it's last update is now causing all manner of crashing problems.

Personally I and my colleagues use Pingchat.
Not only can you send free text messages but pictures, movies and audio files as well.
