This might be a longshot, but I just bought a Galaxy 5, and I'm not gonna get a data plan for it. My old dumbphone had a built-in IM client that worked with just SMS, and I was wondering if there was any android equivalent?

edit: Thought I should clarify; I'm not looking for an alternative SMS client, I'm looking for an instant messenger app that uses SMS instead of an internet connection.

I believe your new handset should come pre-installed with some basic apps like Android Market, Messaging used for send/receive SMS (this is provided for my handset) automatically.

It is only when the provided app are not to your satisfaction then you can hunt around for free app that don't have internet access since you don't intend to get any data plan.

I usually published apps that is paid (low costing) but no full internet access needed unless app functionality is required. I don't want to sound like doing a promotion but you can consider my Sms2Many. This is not a sales pitch but if you feel it is, please ignore my posting.

    Thanks.

Upon second reading I think I mis-interpret what you want. Please ignore my posting.

    Sorry for wasting your time.

Dunno, but if you don't have a data plan I would try if I could SMS via WiFi (only; to avoid extra data charges).

    Hi There,
What you're asking for is something I've developed for gtalk.
All it requires is a google account and that you have an SMS
email address for your phone. I'm working on other chat services
besides gtalk (yahoo, aim, msn, facebook). This app is still in development
    for improvements and suggestions.
Just open the page, log in to the application and keep that page open, and you should be able to use gtalk through SMS messages.
    Check it out!
