Or Google Voice. Or just use an IM app like Google Hangouts.

The Hangouts app on iOS just received an update. That would be worth a try, as well as WhatsApp. You can test it before you go, of course, to see if you like one more than the other.

    I would suggest WhatsApp.

I have used it, and it works really well. Nice and simple. I can't say this first hand, but I have read many times that WhatsApp is really good in bad service situations. I hear people saying they are still available to send messages on 1X data just fine. But if you are just going to be using it from Wifi, I doubt that makes much difference. Maybe the same applies to a bad wifi connection.

I suggest whatsapp or Skype! The only thing is the internet is not free so just make sure she isn't using international data. And uses only wifi. When avalible. Just have here turn of network connections in settings!

I like Hangouts for this purpose. We use it to chat between us (Android phones in the US) and daughter (iPhone in the UK).

If she has a Google Voice account (you're in Canada, so maybe she doesn't?) she could also use Hangouts to call any US/Canada number for free over Wi-Fi or 3G data (assuming she has a good enough data connection and is using an iPhone - the Android version of Hangouts doesn't have the calling feature yet).

I suggest she get a local SIM (if her iPhone is unlocked). My daughter is using Three (three.co.uk). You can buy an add-on for
