Alright, so this is my first smart phone. It may be the fact that I am completley overwhelmed and don't know what I am doing. However, I still haven't seen the wow factor. I've tried a few apps, but nothing has really shown me what my phone can do.

Barcode Scanner - Doesn't work, scan's barcodes fine, never finds the results.
Google Goggles - Doesn't work, maybe has worked with one thing I have scanned, and not that well.
Metal Detector - Doesn't work, I pretty much have to set it on metal objects for it to go off.

So I haven't tried many apps, Google Earth was pretty cool though.

So maybe its me, or maybe I haven't tried the right apps to make me appreciate my phone but so far I'm a little on the meh side.

Someone point me towards something cool (that works), dammit. lol

Dont be unimpressed by apps you know nothing about.. Try more for yourself.. Geez.. Unimpressed by 3 apps?? Try LauncherPro, a good Feed Reader, Angry Birds Beta, Weather Bug, DroidLight, Fruit Ninja, iTitan Radar, Pandora, Robo Defense, ESPN ScoreCenter... There are hundreds of good apps out there. Spend a little time trying instead of complaining..

I use barcode scanner almost every day with no problems ever. Google goggles is a new program did you read any of the release notes when you loaded it? The medal detector app is for fun its a phone don't expect to go out and find some buried gold with it. Enjoy it i install apps all day you should do the same you will find some that interest you. Try the ones longball10 suggested. Shit Launcher Pro will keep you busy for a long time Ive had it since i got my phone and i still change it up daily.

Harsh but true.

OP, you've got to mess around with it. Check out a bunch of apps in the Market. Download AppBrain and get an idea of what others are using, then try them. You can always uninstall them and if it's a paid app, will get a refund if uninstalled within 24 hours. Read the Applications forum, read the Games forum. You can't be afraid to experiment.

It almost sounds like someone buying their first Windows computer and saying they're not impressed because it only plays Minesweeper. :)

Thanks guys, Its just really hard to know what to experiment with when there is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooo much out there. Im reading a few threads on apps. Recently download LP and ADW (ADW seems a bit smoother, but I like the dock features of LP)

theres more to my PC than minesweeper? I'm not sure If I can be down with that :(

Any idea why it told me tapatalk was not enabled on these forums, i see a bunch of people using it :(

I spent 9 days in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho this summer, awesome BTW. I found this great radio station in Montana, very eclectic, that I loved. When I got back to D.C. I downloaded the Lastfm app and found the station on it. So now I'm streaming this awesome Montana radio station in my car. This is one of the things that make a smart phone , smart.

No one here using tapatalk since it was disabled. They have an Admin that hates it and couldn't wait for a reason to pull it.

Don't look for apps for your WOW look at the phone. It can replace, your GPS, your music player, your point an shot camera, your video camera, it has internet access from anywhere, etc etc. Apps are just icing on the cake. If you want to try a cool app that does something you don't thing a phone should do metal detectors isn't very good try the one that takes your pulse it actually works.

Umm, chrome-phone, battery manager, hotmail actually works now, battery life extended by at least 8 hours (if you manage it correctly), apps to SD, REAL Flash for gods sake, great gallery, camera improvements, media player is awesome and the phone is sooo much smoother. I bought the phone with 2.1, leaked, reverted yesterday to OTA and reminded myself how much I DIDN'T miss 2.1 -

My glass is very much half full, if not over flowing

I would wait to root. Pull down the 2.2 update, enjoy the increased performance and play with the phone as it is. By the time you are bored playing with all the settings and have found all the apps you could ever want, we might be lucky enough to have a 2.2 sbf.

There are a bunch of threads on here for what home screens look like, what are good first apps etc. Reading through those and messing around with what you find there will keep you busy for weeks.

You still have an awesome phone that blows most other devices out of the water.

Rooting will allow you to have custom themes, ROM's, free tethering, no bloatware etc. If those things are that important to you, then by all means stay with 2.1. But since you were overwhelmed only a few hours ago, I think it would be best avoid rooting and become comfortable with the device as it is. Rooting only adds more little things to deal with and sometimes headaches for those who screw up.

To add to what other people said, try out the video recording which is quite good for a phone. Take a vid, then watch it full screen on your computer/tv and enjoy the resolution!

Experiment with photos, download Vignette, an awesome app that imo makes the most out of the camera.

Google Maps Navigation is quite awesome imo, if you have money to get a car mount, you can use it as a car navi which is another good use for the phone.

Some cool games for the DX - Try SNESoid if you have some super nintendo nostalgia, angry birds lite is hella fun, robo defense, Gameloft games look great on the DX.

Google sky is pretty cool if you have a good view of the stars.

The text to speech and vice versa is cool. I've been using Vlingo now that it's free, and I love it.

Chrome to Phone (Or fox to phone) is a great app now that we have 2.2.

Peek in the "What do your screens look like?" thread, to get pointers on customizing your phone with different docks/icons etc., which to me made it more enjoyable.

Try a different browser, Dolphin HD is nice I like it a lot. Their tabbed browsing and add on features/themes are cool.

Pandora radio is a must have app for anyone who enjoys music.

Much more to list, but that's enough! Come on some of the stuff must intrigue you a little :D
