for Win 98, XP, Win7 I use Best Free Startup Manager works like a charm - super fast... super clean...

why can't I do the same on droid?

Within certain applications you have on your phone, there is usually an option to enable applications to start up on boot. Just disable those.

No, it's at the discretion of the user. If you have the option to enable or disable start-on-boot, how can you complain about not having control?

Your handset isn't running a Windows OS, so you shouldn't expect it to behave (or require the same maintenance) as one.

You need root access to keep apps from loading on boot if there is no option to keep them from doing it in the first place. I use this app:

ROOT access is required. So don't buy the app until you have root access.

I bit of warning if you try to use the above mentioned app. READ A LOT. If you mistakenly prevent an essential app from running, it may cause a crash cycle of reboot.
