I noticed that Whatsapp are pushing out a message that basically says the following:

This version of Whatsapp will require updating in 14 days.
    Update to the latest version?

And the two options underneath are Cancel & Upgrade.

The version that this message came up with is 2.11.152.

What confuses me here though is if you hit cancel then fair enough, but I clicked on the Upgrade but nowt happened, i've since re-installed my original version just incase.

Apparently there is a version 2.11.181, but this hasn't hit play store yet, this it appears lets you hide last seen and profile pic for certain contacts.

Same here, I was just taken to the Play Store page with an option to uninstall or open?

    Very odd.

Strange how this has happened just after the Facebook takeover.

I would imagine that they probably hoped that playstore would have had the upgrade on their site already, and because they are slow then that will be why we ended up there with those two options to open or un-install.

What was once and probably still is a good app, I can see it getting really bloated and will no doubt end up being put on the scrap heap until another fresh messaging app appears on the scene.

I firmly believe that Facebook if not already will start tampering with it and will more than likely start introducing ads which will really put people off, imho.

I think FB said that when the deal went through, it would remain as it's own app with no ads or facebook integration.

I still prefer SMS, but most of the people I communicate with regularly use it so I've little choice but to use it too.

I know it's relatively cheap, but I'd uninstall if they started showing ads. I don't mind ads at all, but not in paid apps.

Been using it all day here in Spain and no such notice here. I'll let you folks know if I get the message at any point soon, but certainly a little strange sounding for sure!!

I reckon it'll probably start showing ads, as no doubt FB will seek to monetise WhatsApp users over and above the current 99c per-annum.

Well if they do then they'll just lose many users. Surely they make enough profit with facebook without bloating Whatsapp as well.

Anyone think fb bought it just to get all those phone numbers? Other than using advertising, killing it, or integrating the tech into facebook, i cant think of a reason for them to buy it

FB basically paid around $45 per WhatsApp user. Presumably they do have plans for their investment. If they do go putting ads in it, sure that would drive a lot of users away. Think just the app, service and tech alone is not worth 19 billion.

Whatsapp was never worth $19B, but it had of allot of users, Facebook could see potential competition and bought them out.

It may be worth it in the long run for Facebook but it's very anti competitive and shouldn't be allowed to go ahead.
