I will begin by saying I'm sorry if such answers have been answered elsewhere before, I was unable to find any concise answer. Thank you

So I decided to root my incredible 2 last night and preceded as follows:
I began by downgrading to 2.3.3
installed CWM and S-off (back-up of course)
    Rooted
tried installing cyanongen mod 7 (the one in the sticky link)

And that is where things began going wrong. I would boot up and the boot animation would keep repeating until I had to remove the battery.
I realize that is a common issue from other threads but I don't know how to fix it. (I'm sorry, I am quite noobish..)

I did however restore my phone to the backup I had made so that I could use my phone for the time being...

    My questions are:

By going to the previous restore, did I undo the root?
Is there a way to get cyanogen mod 7 to work without that issue?

Lastly, may I add that the main reason I'm doing any of this is to tether my other electronics without having to pay more to verizon for that service. Would I even need cyanogen as long as I have root on 2.3.3 or will I be charged as normal without a mod?

    Thank you so much!

how long did you let it sit at that boot screen? It can take several minutes to boot the first time into a new rom. Mine took a little over 4 mins I believe the first rom I flashed, which was cm7. Most likely by going back you probably don't have root any more. The easiest way to check is to boot into the recovery screen, and it will tell you on the top of the screen if its s-off or s-on.

I would try to redownload the rom you are trying to run again. It could be possible you just got a corrupted file, in which case its a good thing you followed the instructions and did a backup before you flashed the rom.

Personally, I am running AOKP ICS rom on my phone and it runs pretty smooth, haven't had many issues at all, the camera issues are a little annoying, but Angel Camera takes care of most of it. The battery life is outstanding on that rom too.

You don't need to run a custom rom to tether. You just need root access/ superuser rights. You can do it from you stock setup after gaining root and su. Check out pdaNet for wired tether (faster) or Barnacle wifi tether on the play store.
My personal recommendation for good solid ROMs include Nitsuj's GingerbangSense "M" 5.01, or Condemned CM7.2 if you want the CM style.

beat me to it athiest, I was gonna say the same thing. Some of the tethering programs require root to be "free" of charge, but you dont have to run a custom rom to use them. All you hav to do is be rooted. However, different roms have different plusses and minuses, I would do some research over on XDA to make sure that CM7 is the right one for you. Because you can just get one that is stock rom, but debloated (none of the crapware on there) or something like CM7 changes the way the phone works in almost every way. I would say to do some research first before deciding on a rom.

I would agree with this, but I also would like to encourage you to flash a couple different ones. Use Titanium Backup (the paid version is one of the best purchases I've made) or MyBackup to make setting it up quick and easy (just don't restore system data EVER when moving from one rom to another). If you think you like it, make a NAND backup and try another.
Always wipe everything when flashing a new rom.

BTW, it turns out the newest version (3.50) of PdaNet has wireless tethering and it doesn't require root! But you still need to buy the paid version if you want it to support https:// sites.

I've been using PDANet for years but I don't think this discussion is allowed on these forums.

It's all right as long as it doesn't discuss avoiding Verizon's terms of service.

Yeah, I understand that. It is an interesting grey area and I think there ought to be discussion about it somewhere in the community. Maybe not so much as to how to do it but more the moral and legal implications of it.
The Play Store does have PdaNet (which apparently doesn't require root) an I would think Google wouldn't allow it if it were illegal. But I digress. You're probably right.:vroam:
