some questions before upgrading...

OK, I have been an iPhone 3Gs user since it came out. I am on a family plan with 3 lines. Mine and 2 Aria's.

I have an upgrade available in 2 months, which I'm hoping they will give me the upgrade by now. I plan on going to the Inspire 4G.

1. Will I be able to keep the unlimited plan? ATT taking that away is/was ridiculous.

2. Does the iPhone 3Gs and Inspire 4G use the same SIM?

2. Theoretically, what if for some weird reason I dont like the Inspire? Could I just pop the SIM back in the iPhone and resume life as normal?

!. Yes, you should be able to, no problem. You arent changing plans (single to family).

2. They use the same sim AFAIK. Been discussed, but nothing came up to make us believe otherwise.

3. If you want to switch back and forth between phones, that will work...that being said...you may find issues as AT&T requires a iphone data plan, and all others require a smart phone data plan. I encountered a small issue a few months back doing that, and I had to spend a lot of time on the phone straightening some BS out. Mine could of been an isolated incident. If you have doubts, ask an AT&T rep in store when getting the phone.

It's technically the same, but for some reason their system sees them as being different depending on the phone your on, which is why I had some issues.

Steve Jobs (the egomaniac control freak) demanded every aspect of voice, data & text be labeled iPhone this & iPhone that. The reality is Steve creates illusions. Not realities. There is NO TECHNICAL DIFFERENCE between a data plan for an iPhone as compared to any other smartphone. It's only "labeled" as iPhone specific. Yet the reps you talk to go by the label of the plan as they don't know any different.

So when you migrate from an iPhone to Android you DO get to keep your unlimited data, but the plan label changes to Smartphone unlimited data plan. If you fail to be sure it's changed, then you will lose it once someone notices (and they will) yours using an iPhone plan. Confusing I know, but thanks to that Jerk CEO at Apple, that's how it is.

When I started to "hate" my Captivate, I switched the SIM into my old iPhone 3G and didn't have data access. I went to my account online and I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to switch from Smartphone to iPhone data. I couldn't remove Smartphone and there wasn't an iPhone option.

Do you have to change something in settings after the SIM swap to get it to work? If so, I didn't know that at the time.

When I had the Captivate for a short time, I tried the switching to and from the iphone, but keep getting data issues. i had to call and make sure the correct plan was in place. I don't understand it.

I thought about sending this question in a private message, however I thought the discussion would better serve everyone if discussed in the forums. As I'm sure I'm not the only one with this question.

Marc, those of us with unlimited data plans and don't want to change but want the tethering option added. Is there anyway around having to switch to another data plan to get tethering added? Frankly I would be OK with a cap on the tethering option but hate to lose the unlimited plan on my phone. And before others state the obvious yes I understand it's not truly unlimited.

Have you heard any rumors about changes in plans that would allow us to keep the unlimited data plan and add the tethering option?

I guess it is different with each situation. When I went from the iPhone to the Captivate and back to the iPhone the name of my data plan changed each time.
