Just so it's easier to use outside of the phone, is there an app (or even settings I am unaware of) that let you automatically save video files as something other than 3gp (like AVI or MPG)?

Not sure if I'd have to get a camera app made specifically for this or somehow alter the default camera.

    I currently use a Nexus S (3G).

You'd need another camera app. Keep in mind that AVI is just a container format and the codec in the container matters.

I don't think that you can save in anything other than 3GP.

However, on your PC or Mac, you can convert from 3GP to another format, using a free, open-source program like Handbrake.

Or if you just want to be able to play a 3GP video on a PC or Mac (or have your friends and family play a 3GP video), you can download (or have them download) the free, open-source VLC Media Player. The VLC Media Player can play just about any media file known to mankind, and so (in my opinion) everybody should probably have it installed on their PCs & Macs anyway.
