Help Sony "Media Remote" App Problem

I just bought an S580 blu-ray player specifically because of its ability to use the android Media Remote app (so I can TYPE on a real qwerty kb).

Now I can't get it running - getting a same blank screen on my Droid Razr when trying to get the registration between the 580 and the Droid. The TV shows a "start registration" button which starts an operaton lasting about a minute, but nothing happens on the phone screen

I believe both devices are on the same network - since I only have one. In my case, however, the Droid is acting as a wireless hotspot and the 580 is successfully linked to it. Could this hotspot somehow be a problem?

Any suggestions please?

Thanks,
Jack

I have the same setup...you must connect the sony to the wireless network in your house, not the hotspot on the phone...then connect the phone to the network. then it will work...using the phone as the hotspot will never work.

My only internet source is thru my 4G Droid Razr which I use as a mobile hotspot (via FoxFi app - GREAT!) to provide internet to my 2 laptops and my Sony S580 blu-ray player. My printer is on the same Razr hotspot network.

OK, I "assume" I can link the S580 instead to my old Linksys WRT54G wifi router, but HOW do I link the Razr to the router? When I turn on the router my laptops can see the old network SSID, but the Razr does NOT see it (in settings/wireless & networks/wifi. Even using "add network" in the wifi screen does not let me see the old network.

So, again, HOW can I link the Razr to the 54G router (wirelessly) to then provide internet to the S580 blu-ray player? If we can figure that out, then we stand a chance of getting the Media Remote app running.

Here's hoping you have an answer for me!

Thanks,
Jack

Honestly, i have no idea why it can't see the router...perhaps someone else can figure that out for you...as far as internet, you don't need internet for the media app...both devices just have to be connected to the same router. You can always have it reconnect to the razr for internet for software updates, but the app only works through a wireless network as far as I know. Odd that the razr doesn't see the linksys router...I had the same one and it worked fine. Make sure foxfi isn't running when you're trying to see the router.

You've put your finger on it. Whenever foxfi is running the Razr wifi search is totally BLIND to any wifi access points in the vicinity - including itself. This is apparently why I can't get the Media Remote running. I will try getting it running with the 54G router turned on and foxfi turned off. I expect it will work. But the reason I'm trying to do this in the first place is that I want to use the phone soft keyboard to search Netflix movies on the TV - so internet (foxfi) has to be on.

I need a way to run Media Remote while my Razr is actively running Foxfi.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jack

No idea what to do with that situation...i cant stand using the remote on mine to search either. Maybe somebody on here can figure something out, but as far as i know, when the wifi is on, 3g/4g is off. Might just have to deal with using the remote.

Why can't you use the keyboard if both the razr and the blu ray player are on the same wifi network? I would think it would work as long as both objects are connected to the same wifi router

socobandit - Thanks for all your suggestions and thought that you put into this. I'm afraid you're right that I'll just have to suffer using the standard S580 remote. One final thing I'll try tomorrow is to turn foxfi OFF and then get the Media Remote running (should work) via my router. Once it's set up then hopefully it'll keep working when I turn foxfi back on to get an internet connection. Worth a try, but likely won't work. Oh well, thanks again for the effort. If it works I'll let you know.

My guess is that it would take a redesign (firmware or even hardware) of the Razr and/or FoxFi and/or the Sony player to solve this one.

carracerz14 - With both devices on the same wifi network it SHOULD work. But in this case using the Razr with FoxFi (as a wifi hotspot to get internet), the Media Remote App does NOT RECOGNIZE the phone as being on the same network. So it won't connect to the blu-ray.

Connected to the same router they will work fine...his problem is that he wants to use the keyboard while using the RAZR with foxfi to browse Netflix...can't use wifi and data at the same time...his RAZR is his only internet connection

Ok, here is one for you. I have a HTC EVO 3D smartphone running Android 4.0.3. and a Sony Network Media Player SMP-N200. The "Media Remote" application cannot find the SMP-N200 when searching for devices to register. I have them both working through Wi-Fi to a Linksys EA4500. The Wi-Fi connection is unprotected now. I set up MAC filtering instead to secure my network thinking that maybe the WEP or WPA was the problem. Any suggestion or advice would welcome?
