  4. It's not stealing, it's copying. And (99% of) the people who do it wouldn't have bought it anyway.

You'll notice that when these companies finally get around to changing their business practices to adjust for new technologies (instead of fighting them with lobbyists and lawmakers), they start becoming more profitable again.

It's stealing a copy - just as surely as if you'd bought it, that would be a purchased copy.

    Semantics doesn't change reality. :)

PS - Rather surprised you didn't see the flaw in your logic when you used the word copying, as it shares a root word with copyright. ;)

SOPA shelved after Obama announcement - SlashGear

I'm not buying it. It's conditionally shelved in committee but for every time that's killed a bill, it simply means that they've been caught playing political football and they just turn around and go after what they wanted by other means, changing existing bills or re-introducing the legislature under a different name.

See my earlier posts here for cynicism.

We've been down this road already but this time I will put it in as simple of terms as I can. If you don't own it copying is stealing period, simple, end of story.

Let's say you wrote the biggest most awesome OS ever created, you have patents, copyrights and all the protection you can think of, I come along and copy it without permission I stole it and can be convicted in a court as such.

Your logic is not far from "I didn't steal your car, I borrowed it for an undisclosed amount of time"!

Guys check out Google yet? Censored lol. Wikipedia is now down also.... Well, I thought wikipedia was going to be down, 12:26 here, not sure what the hold up is...? *shrugs*

Regardless - Here we go! Enjoy the ride, and a boat load of internet traffic regarding "What's going on with Google/wikipedia" ;) Have fun friends!:D

^ Yeah, I meant the image -- sorry for any confusion...

Wiki is out now - blackout time!

Not sure if that last one will link right (took out my zip ;)).

I like seeing all the sites that have ethics that they are sticking to. While congress bends over to the whims of lobbyists, google and wikipedia are not.

I'm sure you guys all heard about the GoDaddy thing a while back? GoDaddy supported SOPA/PIPA so a boat load of customers left em. GD says "don't care, what protest?" Next day, GD - "okay, we changed our minds, please come back... please" (at least, that's how I took it.. >.>)

hah - nice find karandpr. :p

If you link to a youtube (just as far as the watch spec, be sure to leave off embedded, player, etc clauses) our site software will embed your vid automagically. And never use the link shortener. Fixed your vid.

We're a privately owned site. The Suggestion has been made to the owner, but we're not expecting a blackout at this point.

We've been discussing SOPA and raising awareness for it in the Politics and Current Affairs subforum of this Lounge in the thread I started last October.

Yeah, it's funny how our elected representatives are supposed to "REPRESENT US", and yet we have to mount massive protests to convince them to not screw us over.

Spot on. The representation is for big companies who are complaining of lost revenue due to piracy and other nefarious doings by non-U.S. based entities.

That issue may be real, but you don't deal with it by punishing everyone and swishing a government hand around in things you don't understand. And believe me, those politicians don't understand the internet.

It seems to me that the "foreign" companies who are stealing U.S. based products and info have that ability because of lack of good solid, high tech American corporate security features as individual companies, not because the internet is "too free."
