Sound Control on DROID

I am having a issues controlling sound. I have installed timeriffic, but it doesn't give as much control as I thought it would.

• With sound off and ringer to vibrate only, when I open some apps, like a game, it will start blasting sound and I have to go into options and turn off sound in the actual application, so it doesn't look to be 'obeying' the primary sound settings.
• I received a 'not so work appropriate' mms message from my brother while I was at work. Even with sound off, it blasted inappropriate sound file all over the workplace. Needless to say, this is unacceptable.
• Pressing the volume down tends to control the ringer and not all sound.
• If I have the device sound off (swipe left from the lock screen), then open an application like pandora, it plays sound.

Is there an application or some system settings that can put me in control of the sound instead of the droid and individual applications?
