Sound Settings and Options...Not that great

Why is it that if you set your phone to vibrate, the media volume stays on, and the notification sounds (ex. text message) gets completely muted without even vibration? Is there any way that when I put my phone on vibrate it will automatically mute the media volume and put notifications on vibrate???
