So I go a month without service to save $$$. I pay for the
service the subsequent month only to find I've just spent $50
on a OBVIOUSLY throttled 3G. Can anyone explain what happened? Just
    curious

I have had a Vm for a year now and have never seen real 3g speeds

As many people have said before, Virgin Mobile users get secondary access to towers compared to sprint users. As such, our speeds literally suck monkey ***. If you want ACTUAL 3g speed, you will have to go with a major network provider :/

Our 3G is like 2G much like T-Mobile's 4G is only a barely faster 3G

Sprint users get around the same 3G speeds as us, at least in my case. My friend has Sprint and we tested in the same spot and got similar results.

Fun fact - all the stupid G's are just buzz words the carriers use for meaning their generation of networking technology. So yes, in fact, one companies 3G could be faster than another's 4G. But in my experience T-Mobile's 4G has been fast for me, whereas with VM I had calls dropping near the window in my house. Depends on location mainly. T Mobile has awesome reception in my area, for the most part.

Yeah at my house with a nexus 4 on the tmobile 30 plan I was getting a 15 meg down and almost 2 up while my super fast triumph gets almost a meg down on a good day in the middle of the night right under the tower(I can see there tower from my back yard)

Either I am lucky or I don't know what I'm missing out with a "real" carrier because I have never had any complaints about my data speed. From my Blackberry 8530 to my Optimus V to my Triumph, all have had great service (to me, anyway). The last time I had a phone on a "real" carrier was my old 1st-generation Motorola Razr on "America's LEAST Reliable Network" so I honestly don't know how VM compares to anything else.

Care to post any download/upload stats? I often got speeds of 200kb or less at home and a few times got around 1.2Mb at work. In my experience, VM data speeds are hugely variable.

On the other hand, something that seriously ticks me off about t-mobile is that if you are outside an urban area, even on a major interstate, you often have only 1x data in areas I would have consistent 3G with VM. Everything is a tradeoff...

In an urban area, right? A shame. I know Sprint's network apparently sucks on the West Coast. I was lucky to even have a signal in my home, and I live near Baltimore (Harford County, MD).
