What are you trying to install? If you ever get that message it's generally a bad file. You can try downloading it again, from a mirror site if possible. Another option is to flash Clockwork Recovery and try installing through it. (Raid Zero is another recovery option out there, but I've not used it before)

When installing an update.zip within SPRecovery, you must first select "allow update.zip install". It will seem like nothing happened. Then select install update.zip.
