Root [Sprint/Cricket] Best Rom for Wife's S3.

My wife has been using the S3 for about a month on stock Jelly Bean. She sometimes complains about strange notifications and such that seem to be coming from either samsung or sprint, and I have advised her that we might want to look at rooting.

That said, she is no tech genius. I make my living in IT and am not worried about rooting. I want to choose a rom that will give her a great list of new functions and remove the bloatware, while not taking away features she might be used to.

Anyone have any Rom Suggestions. She is using a 1 month old Sprint S3 in the US. Thks..

Well, I think that it is important to consider what kind of features your wife is looking for before we go ahead and jump the gun on selecting a ROM.

Does she like TouchWiz or would she be open to trying an AOSP-based ROM?

hi..

i just got my S3 a few weeks ago..my first Samsung.. rooted it... so simple.
read about the different ROMs..

the one i settled on was "The People's ROM". (TPR)

it keeps all the Touchwiz stuff..I wanted to keep TW because it has a lot of great features.

TPR also uses Aroma installer.. this is nice because before it installs the ROM.. it gives you a list of options/features/apps that you can set/change/install..

also gives you 3 kernels to choose from.

can set clock seeds for the CPU .. over or under.. so many options.

can Wifi hotspot..

it just ads on to what the S3 already is. so that what she is used to .. she still has and sees.
this way.. she is not in any shock.. it is a great first ROM to test the waters. Others are total change that she might miss some things or be turned off by plan stock android.

HINT: before you flash a ROM... do a full nandroid backup. and then WIPE everything.. clean the phone! so that you have less chance for ghost issues.

The People's Rom sounds promising. I am not even sure what touchwiz is, so I cannot speak to that. I want to be able to install root only apps on her phone, which is another motivation.

If I do a full nandroid backup, how much will be different on her phone after the Rom is loaded? Will she have to reload her current apps, reset here home screen, widgets, etc. Sorry for the belated response. I will be quicker to reply this time. Thks!

Ok, checked it out and I think sticking with Touchwiz is going to be important, as that is what she is used to. Also.. I am not finding a link to the people's rom in the Rom list sticky...

Is there a Rom out that is close to Normal Sprint Jelly Bean Touchwiz, but with root access?

Yes, check my signature. It'll say Compiled ROM List. Official Stock JB and Blazer are the closest (official is the stock, lol) you can get. FreeGS3 is really close but the notification bar has changed.

Ok. So one more question.. I am now going to install. Is there a good way to back the phone up now, while I am lacking root access, so that I can easily restore her settings after the phone has been rooted? It seems like most of the backup programs, including titanium, require root. Any advice appreciated!

1st.. here is the link to the peoples rom, that you asked for:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2013463&page=100
it is full TW.. with more added.

total backup can only be done with root access.. so that the app can have full access to your phone, to back it up. kind of hard to do, if you can not get to it.

rooting does not change anything on the phone, but one thing:
it removes all locks and gives the user full access. the phone will still work 100% just the same as before! so after you root.. go and make a backup in the recovery that you put in. this back up is called a nandroid..100% full backup.

nandroid backup is a great idea to do before any experimentation on the phone.
if anything goes wrong.. and you have issues.. you can put it back to the way it was before you started the experiment/mod/flash/change.
