LF9, LG8, LI3 are all official releases of the Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android for the Sprint Galaxy S III. LIF and etc (because there were more) were leaked version of ICS/Jellybean that a developer got his hands on, rooted it, and allowed other users to try out and test. Samsung and Sprint didn't release them (LIF-LJ5) because there were bugs and they were trying to iron them out.

I to had an HTC before moving to Samsung. Samsung is a lot easier to root and manipulate than HTC. There is no locked boot loader (except for the Verizon version of the S3) and you can just Odin (desktop application, better than recovery, in my opinion, for huge mishaps) back to stock everything if something goes wrong.

with htc.. i had better luck with amon ra recovery..
from reading with other people's issues with some ROMs.. and it turns out that clockwork recovery was part of the issue.

have you heard any root methods that use Amon Ra Recovery on Samsung S3?

Amon RA isn't designed to work with the S3. The best recovery we have is TWRP. Check my signature and you'll see a link or you can download GooManger from the Play Store and download it via that application.

The ROM list has been updated to include new ROMs and move unattended or outdated ROMs to their own section.

Edit: I have no idea what you said but did you flash the ROM this way?:

How to install (If you are coming from another ROM):

    - Download the ROM -
    - Copy the zip file to your SD/Internal card -
    - Enter recovery mode -
    - Wipe data/cache (factory reset) -
    - Flash the zip -
    - Enjoy -

    Thanks for this useful thread!
    (Yes, I use it!)

PS: It would be great if you put the actual update date next to each ROM, rather than "*NEW*" which is kinda relative.

Thank you!! I was thinking about doing that but when I check on them they change rather frequently. Some don't even have a date, I would have to search the last few pages of posts to see if people started chatting about a new update. :/

When I say "new" it means that it's newly added to the list. My bad for the confusion :(

It's harder to find ROM compatibles with SGH-i747 model. It would be good to have in this list the variants of S3 supported.

    Great list though!

Since this is the Sprint forum, I only included Sprint variant ROMs. It avoids flashing the wrong software and bricking a device.

    CarbonRom? Doesn't make the cut?

Liquid Smooth 4.2.1 with its last update of Jan 26 does, but not the CarbonRom prong of the fork with a stable 4.2.2 on Mar 03 and nightly builds that are current?

    Just wondering...

I can most certainly can add it :)
I try to keep up on the roms for the Sprint Variant of the S3 and I like the input from members such as yourself to help me out
    Thanks!
Can you provide a link to the Carbon Rom?

Mikes graciously been maintaining the rom list for multiple devices, some of which he doesn't even own.

So its not that roms not listed aren't making the cut, its that staff is either too busy or unaware of the need for change.

A "heads up" pm or post is usually enough to get the attention it deserves

First let me say, I am new around here: if any disrespect or even criticism was inferred from my previous post let it be known that was far from my intent. I was literally wondering.

I'll also say that prior to posting I had thanked Mikestony for this thread.

Indeed, the reason I signed up for this Phandroid site today was for the express purpose of thanking him.

As many Android sites as there are, this thread is actually unique in clearly spelling out which custom ROMs are derived from what. It would be an extraordinarily helpful reference just as a static list. That Mikestony actively maintains and updates it, makes it all the more relevant and helpful.

So hopefully my appreciation of this thread is now clear.

I wasn't sure if there was some protocol, or some reason I was unaware of, for omitting Carbon, so I thought I'd ask.

As there is clearly a participatory aspect that I'm now 100% aware of, here are the relevant CarbonRom links that I know of for the Sprint variant of the Samsung Galaxy S III:

No worries at all Mr. Happy :) I didn't think your post was disrespectful and I didn't take it that way. It's all good :D
If you see any other roms that should be added, I invite you to let me know about them:)

We all work together here and thank you for those links you provided for us !!

And since I didnt notice it last time because I was posting from my phone.... Welcome to the forums!! :D

Yall remember when our teachers and parents told us there's no such thing as a stupid question...well that just isn't true. Well here goes. I'm looking for a ROM, but there are so many choices and that has intimidated me into NOT rooting, but Imma go ahead and do it anyways. Here's the question...how do ppl choose their ROMs? Do yall just flash random ROMs delete them and go to the next or do ppl have a more methodical means of choosing ROMs. Oh and this is of course for a Sprint GS3

Most people start with the popular ones. They're generally popular because they're stable.

If you like touchwiz, check out either chubbs or MOAR. I've also heard good things about the peoples ROM

If you like AOSP, check out cm10.1 or liquidsmooth
