Call quality is job #1 in a cellphone. Unfortunately - the call quality of my new EVO is noticeably worse than my 4 yr old LG Fusic flip phone. I listened to another EVO at the Sprint store, and it sounded similar to mine

Tinny muffled sound, scratchy static at the end of loud(er) utterances. My voicemail quality is especially bad. Sounds like my ear speaker is vibrating against a piece of metal.

It sounds like a bad VOIP connection - or more likely SPRINT went for a lower bit rate audio codec in this phone to increase network capacity. If so it was a VERY BAD decision. The reason I have stayed with SPRINT is call quality and connection reliability.

Anyone else experiencing similar issues? I would GLADLY trade battery life for a higher audio bit rate to the network.

I'm having the same issue (especially the static after loud voices), heard they will replace if you bring it in. It's been done here already.

I'll probably bring it in soon

If its a network bandwidth policy issue the call quality could vary by region based on network demand. Audio bit rates are an adjustable/programmable parameter. One would think likely to be worse in high adoption rate urban areas. Hard to know unless someone at Sprint fesses up.

I have that little bit of static on the line, and some peoples voices sound robotic from time to time. But the worst problem is the voicemail...sounds absolutely horrid. Yes I'm a little upset, because as whole I really like the phone. Size is awesome for me, and the screen is beautiful. However, when you add some of these issues in with some build quality issues, it just doesn't add up to keep it as an everyday personal device.

I'm going to give it a shot with a replacement when Best Buy gets them in this weekend, and if its all good, I'm sold. If not I'm just going to return it and figure what to get.

Those are say they can't hear the static voices/tiny muffled sounds are deaf :) Me and my 6 friends who have the evo all said that the earpiece is crap on the Evo. It's not the call quality we're talking about here. It's the actual crappy earpiece that produces the annoying loud voice muffle sound.

i am not deaf.. in fact quite the opposite... and mine is just fine... maybe accept that not everyone that has the EVO has the same issues / problems that you do...

Evo sounds great here, best sounding phone i've had in a while. The visual voicemail messages do sometimes have a bit of static to them but that is something to do with the audio playback or recording because there is no static through the earpiece if you actually dial out to your voicemail instead of just using the recordings the app makes for you.

I can live with that though because its so nice not having to dial voicemail and go through messages one by one, I love being able to see all the messages right there on the screen and just selecting which ones to play from a list. This is one of my favorite features on the phone.

With the numerous posts/threads floating around here in regards to the earphone along with a slew of other issues, I can pretty much say that the quality control is not top-notch with the Evo.

and has so many has pointed out BEFORE.. we are but a small few of the population...

there are equally if not more saying there's is fine.. so if someone has a problem with their phone in any capacity then they have options like return it or try to resolve the problem..

your posts have been negative in almost every one.. I don't understand the reasoning behind it.. IF you have the phone and are unhappy.. then return it and be on your way...

Have you updated the PRL and profile? That did wonders for my call quality.

Everyone's idea of "sounds good/great" is going to vary, but if the voice mail server is using a low bitrate codec, the best sounding phone on the cleanest circuit is not going to improve the quality of that call. My first call with the Moto Droid was to the Verizon voice mail system...granted I was in a low/no signal area, and the codec level most likely dropped, but the quality was horrid. Subsequent calls to land lines sounded better, and marginally better to VM, but I ultimately gave up with the phone and VZ, even after my antenna mod.

FWIW, colnago = VoIP eng., recently upgraded VM servers from G.729 to G.711...big difference in call quality, esp. when recording ACD trees (press #1 for...press #2 for...).

Well after a full week with the EVO , I will say this about the call quality. It's decent, isn't great, isn't horrid (except for voicemail) other then that , its ok! On a plus side, I have not not had to deal with dropped calls like on my iPhone, which is a big plus. However thats more network related then phone related. But let's be honest folks, it could be a lot better, HTC cheaper on the speaker on this phone, just like they did on the incredible.

Sprint/Evo doesn't seem as clear as when I was with T-mobile/iPhone. Don't know if it's just Sprint, but when taking calls/voicemail via headset, the sound has a bit of a electronic tone.

    I have fantastic sound quality.

And, Call quality is pretty far from MY #1 concern in a cell phone. Let's not generalize us all into people who actually make phone calls. After all, I thought the point of a smartphone was that I wouldn't have to talk anymore. :D

All factors are important to me. And fortunately, EVO succeeds in each one. No issues with call quality. If I did have issues, I demand an exchange for a replacement.

i'm getting what the op is getting after getting my screen replaced.

Tinny muffled sound, scratchy static at the end of loud(er) utterances. My voicemail quality is especially bad. Sounds like my ear speaker is vibrating against a piece of metal.

the high pitch kind of hurts my hear, and when i'm talking to someone who speaks softly it sounds really muffled up. i have to bring it back in to sprint and have them fix it!
