Was there some kind of update today through Sprint? I was getting off work and I noticed my phone restarted twice on it's own. Then it went into the long drawn out installing 1, 2,....of 196 or something like that. I was driving, so I really could not pay too much attention.
Indications are below, but I do not remember what they were. Everything looks the same, but I have 1 GB of new space?

    Android 4.4.4
    Baseband version M8974A-
    Kernal version 3.4.0-gd59db4e android-build @vpbs1.mtv.corp.google.com#1
    Build number KTU84P

    Hey 9878,

I'm on T-Mobile and my About phone Settings info is identical to yours.

What you described does sound like what you see after an OTA update when (I believe) the dalvik-cache is rebuilt ("updating apps" or similar).

Did you happen to enable ART and then revert back to Dalvik?

I don't know that is what would happen, but I can imagine that if you had been running ART (Android Runtime) and then went back to Dalvik that he'd have to rebuild the davlik-cache.

I might test this to see what it does...

Well, switching to ART does do this:

(LOL, the color should be light blue (cyan) above, but it's too hard to read :p)

I'm guessing or wondering if switching back will do this, too (will update post in a few minutes after I've switched back).

Kinda sounds like you might have switched runtimes...?

I have to agree with you there SA. Especially since Google is the one that rolls out the updates for the N5 and not the "Carrier's" e.g. Sprint/T-Mobile.
Something must have happened that made it Reboot and Optimize the apps. Interesting none the least!

    xdrc45 :).

Yeah, it also did this when I switched back to Dalvik, but interestingly enough, the number of apps went from 136 for ART back down to 76 for Dalvik (and went much faster than the optimizing for ART, but I attribute that to the fact that I'd never run ART on this N5 before and he had to do all of the apps).

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that's what happened (even if the trigger event was in question).

Cool... Yeah I believe it initially takes longer to optimize or compile ART than Dalvik does, but obviously once ART is up and running it's quite quicker than Dalvik.

Interesting about the app count though.

That was it. My phone reverted back from ART. Changed it back to ART. I hope I don't have a problem. Phone has been great.

I know that ART takes longer to optimize because it's optimizing all of each app instead of just enough for the app to get into JIT mode.

Not sure about the apps though, do you think it's because ART is also optimizing all background services whereas for dalvik it only optimizes some of them maybe?

Not sure, GuitarG20--I've only read / researched a little bit about ART to this point.

I guess I'll have to start paying more attention now that it's coming and inevitable ;) :p.

A little late to the convo here, but it is possible the lower number was total apps - system apps, IE user installed apps?

Not sure...I do have a lot (LOT) of disabled (frozen) apps on my device that I simply thaw-out when I need to use.

Perhaps the ones for Dalvik mode skipped the ones that were disable whereas ART scanned/prepped them all.

    Just a guess.

The gremlin has struck again. This morning my phone started restarting over and over sometimes barely showing the Google word, sometimes getting to the colorful dots, and sometimes to my home screen. I just plugged it in and let it go. Then I noticed it was updating and was excited thinking I was getting Lollipop! Nope. It had just again reverted from ART to Dalvik. I will never buy another phone that I can't take the battery out.....
