Another offering from Moto is on the horizon, and we know more about it than the rumored Droid Prime, Prime Nexus from Sammy as there have been leaked blurry and press shots of it.

I'm interested in it because of its AMOLED display, Kevlar backing and spash coating. I really wanted an SGS2 but that's not coming to Verizon so I'm looking to Prime. The thing is that I'm pretty hard on my phones, however, and I'm afraid of breaking the thing. I'm a little iffy on the super rounded look of the Nexus S as well, which the Prime is supposed to be a bigger version of looks-wise.

Thanks for the diligent recon and info! I have been following the Spyder for a few months since it was first linked to the Droid Bionic and speculated to be the second generation Droid Bionic HD.

this device is right at the top of my list, along with the Nexus. my preference has always been for Moto devices, but i've been a little disappointed in Moto's offerings over the last year, including the Bionic. but, the rumors of this device lead me to think Moto might be taking a big step toward reestablishing itself as THE top OEM. if this would have an unlockable BL (ie, with an unlocking tool, not necessarily unlocked out of the box), then even if the Nexus were to come as speculated, i still would be inclined to take the Spyder.

moreover, the leaks from This is my next over the weekend corroborate some VZW focus group docs that were leaked over at AC a couple months back. in particular, the focus group docs mention kevlar material and diamond cut spun chrome - which is pretty much what the leaked pics show. the focus group docs were never associated to a specific device, but now it appears it may be the Spyder. in addition to what we've heard, those docs also give some other specs - shaping up to be a beast of a device:

    1800 mAh batt
    1.2 ghz dual core
    8 mp camera
qHD Super AMOLED screen (this is big news!)
    4.3" screen
    127 grams and 1/4" thick

Huskerkate, did I see you over at HoFo? I was excited to see the "hands on" leaks posted there.

yep, that's me. fone sex over at HoFo has a friend who is testing the device, and he's apparently had some "hands on" time with the device (as you've probably read). all indications are that the Spyder will have a never-before-seen type of AMOLED screen. he seems really impressed with the device, which coincides with the excitement supposedly existing internally at Moto and VZW. i'm getting awfully amped about this device!! dual core, LTE, AMOLED screen, thin, Moto build quality - woot!!

I'm a little disappointed in the screen size (4.3") - isn't the plain Bionic 4.5"? The two things I didn't like about the plain Bionic were the RAM (512 Mb) and the screen type/quality/resolution. Glad to see teh Spyder is 1.2G dual core though! So I expect 4G/LTE too, right?

yes, an "insider" over at HoFo has confirmed it is LTE. that insider (Susurro), as well as others (wnrussell) have said that the Spyder is shaping up to be a better device than the Bionic - whether significantly better, or just incrementally better, is still unknown (and largely subjective). but, word is that Moto and VZW are much more excited about this device as compared to the Bionic.

Where did you get the idea that Bionic was 512 MB RAM? It's 1GB.

    Bionic screen is 4.3"

You're right on both accounts. But with respect to the ram, maybe she was talking about usable ram?? I know that the ram has been partitioned for system, apps, and webtop os; but I don't know if it has been determined how much has been partitioned and how much is left. I don't know, because quite frankly I haven't been paying any attention to the Bionic after the Spyder and Prime leaked...

I think it will be interesting to see what Moto does with the webtop on the Spyder. Moto has basically said it will come with every high end device from here on out. And, the Spyder has to be considered high end. But, I don't think the wehtop is really catching on like it could, or like they thought it might. It's a cool idea, and could have some very attractive professional uses. But, IMO, the price point is way too high, especially considering how under-developed it is for functionality.

Still, this thing is gonna be a beast. The news today is that the vzw Nexus is most likely gonna be a pure Nexus device. Looks like it will be announced, along with ICS, on Oct 11. So, the Panda's predicted release date of Nov 3 is also looking pretty good. So, in theory, the Spyder could release on Black Friday and still be outside the 14 day return window that seems to be playing a role in release timing. Pure speculation of course, but things are seemingly falling in line for a holiday release, as expected.

I will be surprised if Prime launches on VZW. VZW in general isn't a big fan of phones that come without their bloatware. Remember, carriers get $$ back from bloatware apps on a device.

Add that to the number of other 4G phone launches that seem to be coming up at the same time for VZW, and it just doesn't add up in my opinion.

Just a guess. I could be wrong.

I do hope you are right, Huskerkate. The Nexus and Spyder releasing the same month would be AWESOME!!

I for one would definitely be interested in using webtop... Especially as the phones come out loaded with enough processor and RAM to fully support it.

history certainly supports you. but, the system app list leaked yesterday for the Nexus, and it seems destined for VZW (at least there's a couple of system apps with a VZW prefix). however, it doesn't have any other bloatware. and, in the Nexus Prime pre-release thread, a supposed VZW person has been posting indicating that vzw may be finally relenting and allowing a pure Google device. i, for one, am not yet ready to declare that we enthusiasts have "won" out, but it's looking much more promising.

also, in the "fwiw" category, p3Droid tweeted a retraction of his "no vanilla andy on vzw" statement, indicating that the Nexus on vzw may be "pure."

Maybe the RAZR name on the firmware was someone's idea of an inside joke? FWIW, I vote for calling it Droid Spyder.

you could be right. the guys over at HoFo have been saying how tight the wraps have been on this device. and, recently with the Nexus, we've heard that Sammy may have been using the Nexus Prime name (in the cease and desist letter) as a decoy/misdirection. the RAZR name could be the same thing.

or, Moto could have "allowed" the leak so as to get a read on the market response to resurrecting an iconic name.

at this point, who knows anymore, right?! ;)

someone over at HoFo just made an interesting point. the guy who was able to play with the D4/Maserati a little said that the D4 might take the Droid HD name, and not the Spyder. so, this entry in the CelleBrite could signal the D4, and not the Spyder/Droid RAZR/?? This would also make some sense given that the model number in CelleBrite is listed as XT912, when the Spyder is supposedly the XT910.

it would also make sense that Moto would come out with a follow up to the D3 before a follow up to the Bionic, since the D3 has been out longer ("longer" being a very relative term these days). also, Jha said that Moto would have another LTE device out before the end of the year. up until now we've all been assuming it would be the Spyder, since that's the only device we had a whiff of.

i would be very disheartened if the Spyder got pushed back until after the first of the year.

I hope you're right, and I hope we see the Spyder before the end of the year. I just thought the Guy had raised an interesting point. But, the fact is that we've seen quite a few leaks of the Spyder, and nothing for the D4. So, I would tend to think that the Spyder would be released first.

over at HoFo, fone sex is someone who's had a chance to see both the Spyder and Maserati (D4). he just confirmed that in the units he saw, under "about phone", the Spyder is model XT910 and the Maserati is XT912.

so, it looks like the device showing up in CelleBrite is the Maserati, not the Spyder. of course, nothing is for certain, but Jha indicated only one other LTE device before the end of the year. right now, it's looking more like it will be the Maserati/D4. rather discouraging news to me, personally...

So what does Spyder (or Razr) exactly have over Bionic? I don't see much difference other than slim form factor.

mainly, it's the slimmer form factor, plus a better screen. supposedly coming with the qHD Super AMOLED screen. other than those 2 things, it is very similar to the Bionic.

But it's still qHD pentile while most others are already going HD resolution. And it's Super AMOLED from samsung? Didn't most Bionic fans swear that their LCD is vastly superior to SAMOLED? just joke.

yeah?! i take it you have some info that most of us don't!?! ;)

actually, i misread fone sex's posts over at HoFo. he merely confirmed that the Spyder model is XT910 - he did not confirm that the Maserati/D4 is XT912 (i just got reading too fast and jumped to conclusions). in fact, there is some indication that the Maserati is XT894 (which would make more sense given that the OG, D2, and D3 all had 800 model numbers). so, we don't know what the XT912 is for sure, unless it's a more current version of the Spyder...
