Is it okay to use the standard mini-B usb cable to charge Eris?
Yes and yes
cool... save me a trip to the store and $$.
but i think you cannot sync with a regular usb cable..the one that comes with your phone has 10 pins and the regular usb is 5 pins..will still charge tho.
Can anyone confirm that we need a 10 pin usb cable?
I just plugged my eris into my computer USB last night to try to recharge it, and now it won't recharge at all, even with the adapter that came with it.
does your computer sleep after a while? mine does
1. when i plug the wifes storm into the pc at night, the pc goes to sleep, it actually drains the life out of the storm to the point it has to be on the real charger for like 15 minutes for it to come on
2. a usb charge is not a real charge but a conditioning/trickle charge. it may take a LONG time to get a full charge from the usb to pc setup.
leave your phone on the wall charger for a while, it'll wake up
i was doubtful myself, but yes indeed, a std 5 pin mini usb will not sync, just charge.
I don't know about that. I am not home now to count the pins, but I have been connecting the Eris to my MacBook with a standard Mini USB cable -- the same that came with my camera or hard drive or flash card reader...
(Usual trapezoid shape, not the one-side-squared-off cable)
In your case the usb doesn't matter, im sure it charges it, but does your pc sleep after a while? Go into powersave mode? Know what i mean?
I have a powered USB hub so the PC will go to sleep but the phone will still charge. just a thought if anyone is using a hub.
Yes the regular USB charger works
BTW, Toys R Us has one made by firefly on clearance for $1, I picked up a couple and I got my car charger on eBay for only $2.75 with free shipping. A regular USB charger saves alot of money since the battery is SO BAD on the Eris.
Standard mini USB 5pin works charges AND transfers data. I use a standard 5pin mini USB cable to tether my Eris to my laptop.
oddly enough i did get my 5 pin cable to connect to my pc today for file transfers
I was stressing out that I blew out my new Droid Eris, but it turns out the USB connector wire was faulty! I took it into the store and swapped out different parts to see what was wrong, and the phone & the adapter functioned fine with another wire.
I guess plugging it into the PC blew it out. Cheap Chinese garbage.
I got a replacement and it's working fine to transfer files to and from the laptop over USB. I pulled down the Android USB drivers from somewhere, and it worked perfectly.
This phone is really impressive.
I just got the Eris yesterday, 11/30. I love it all, accept the battery life. Through what I have read is that the USB chord should be able to charge the phone through a computer right? I had it at work today and had it hooked up to a PC desktop and it charged just fine, but know that I am at home and have it hooked up to my MacBook Pro Laptop it says it's charging but the battery indicator does not change at all when unplugged. Any ideas on what is going on? Should I go to Verizon and get another USB chord and see if that is the case?
It will charge off a computer, but charges 2x as fast off the wall/AC.
My wife and I each have an Eris, so I got three sets of these from Amazon. They all work fine, and now we don't have to worry about charging, as we have chargers for all vehicles, work, home etc. At about $2 per cable (including shipping) it's hard to go wrong.
Also when we bought our phones the Verizon rep told us a Motorola Razor (my wife's previous phone) charger will work for an Eris, but it won't charge as fast. Ok to use as a back up, but not as a primary charger.

I also use an old motorola krazor to charge it at work. It does charge slower (3 hours to charge full from empty)
HTC charger takes about 2 hours to charge full from empty battery.
Interesting. My phone charges slow as balls on my blackberry charger. I have honestly only ever charged it once on the included charger. Hmmmm.
The standard mini charges and transfers with mine on 2 seperate laptops. It does seem to charge slow on computer tho
The charge through a PC is a trickle charge. It's kindof only for emergencies.
I was experiencing no charging at all, neither through the PC nor the provided adapter. The battery icon on the phone didn't have the lightning bolt in it and the little red light didn't go on. As long as you have that, my guess is that your cord is fine and that you're just seeing the results of a trickle-charge by PC.
The battery is rather weak, I would agree. From my understanding, this is the case with most of the smart phones though...
Just a note that what USB plug you plug into could affect the amount of charge. The USB plugs on some keyboards and hubs get far less charge than one right in the tower for a desktop.
If you read the comments at the bottom of the page showing those chargers, you'll see that people are complaining about them either not fitting the phone or not charging. I'd stay away from third party charging cords.
Not vouching for that particular charger, but I'm not sure what kind of plug it has that doesn't fit -- the Eris socket and HTC-supplied USB cable do have a funny shape, but a standard mini-usb plug fits also. I did the manual update using another USB cord, and have verified that the phone charges with my Garmin GPS's AC and car charger. I will try my wife's iPhone charger tomorrow (the phone end of the Apple cord has a proprietary connector, but other end plugs into the little cube with a standard USB connector)
It is mini-USB, not micro-USB, which I gather many phones have now, but mini-USB is also quite common; you probably have a few cords from cameras, small USB hubs, etc.
You do want something that specs at least 1 Amp output to match the supplied charger (though I believe it will charge more slowly connected to a computer or other lower current supply)
This is a little off topic, but close. Does anyone know if I can use the generic car charger that has a mini-usb connection with my ERIS. It was purchased for use with my Motorola Krzr.
