Status bar pull down menu question

I have purchased several Droid Maxx phones recently and successfully activated them and for the most part successfully configured them.

I have compared the phones and found that there is an icon that is different than the other in the top right corner of the status bar pull down menu. One of them is a square of squares in top right hand corner and the other phone has a gear in the same place.

When the icon is selected the one with the square of squares has the phone owner identified in the left top of the grid that is shown. The one with the gear has no identification for the person in the top left of the grid.

Is there a document I can use to find information about details? All the information I have found only provides an overview of functionality of various features and hardware buttons and things.

If anyone knows about this please respond.

That is a quick way to switch the notification shade to a quick settings shade. If I remember right, the older version of the system, version 12.7.7 that came with the phone when shipped, used a gear icon to launch that. The icon was changed to the squares icon with the 12.15.15 over the air update that came in mid-November. Maybe that's why you see a difference?

As far as I recall, the top left icon should alway be set to the "Me" contact in the People app, which I think is set as the user logged into Google+ on the phone. (If it's not by logging into G+, I can't recall how to make a contact the "ME" contact, as it's already set on mine.)

12.7.4 it is the version that was in the original release of the Maxx on release day. On that day there was an OTA to be applied immediately.

To get the user name to display in that settings menu, you have to complete the "ME" contact info in the Contacts app. Open Contacts, and "ME" is the first person listed. It also drives the personalization when using Touchless Controls, for example, Good Afternoon, Bill, when you you say the magic words - OK Google.

One of the phones updated while I was configuring it. Not sure if I prompted it to do it. The other two were still on 12.7.4 and have been updated before I read this post so regrettably, I cannot take a screen shot of it now.

I fixed the "ME" in the contact list.
