Whats your preference? Sit back let the car do the work? or do you like rowing through those gears? Do you know how to drive or stick or not?

Me i'm all about standard, all i've ever owned and driven. the few times I have tried driving auto I always forget theres no clutch and stomp the E-Brake.

I actually prefer a stick but automatic is OK. I have a Mazda 3 and couldn't imagine NOT shifting. Small cars need sticks, that's all there is to that.
My son never really mastered shifting, he tried but it is not for him.

Good question. I used to love to drive standard .... nothing like slapping the thing into 4th (5 speed transmission) on the highway and blowing past a Dodge Dart. However, my new car has a CVT transmission with magnesium paddle shifters for manual (electronic shift) or fully automatic. They are pretty darn responsive for performance, but I get better mileage using automatic. I have to say, that my clutch foot isn't unhappy.

how do you like the CVT? the performance increases from them are nuts, the few times i tried it in a test drive, I always felt it made driving too Video-gamey.

It takes a bit of getting used to and the lighter the vehicle the more you're going to feel it. We got a twofer in the spring (Bought a Mitsu Outlander and Lancer at the same time) and the Outlander definitely is smoother, but damn the Lancer is a fun car to drive. I can get 40mpg with the Lancer If I drive like an old fart.

Stick all the way. I like my Toyota Tacoma. All our cars were stick - from the 75 Opel Manta (just junked this year) to the Toyota Tercel.

Just out of curiosity, why don't you combine stick vs auto with Apple vs Android? Wonder what kind of results that would bring?

All road tests should be given in a stick shift. I learned how to drive one in the fields when I was 5 years old. I have had a few automatics through the years, but have always ended up with a stick. You can get better mileage, automatics are expensive to fix, and clutched cars are better for performance on the road. All I see is win for manual transmissions...

And I bet iPhone users are for the most part automatic tranny types.... ;) (I kid I kid)

I learned how to drive a standard in a 55 chevy truck on the side of a hay field. I didn't want to roll back down the hill so I went up it.:D I liked to slam gears and drag race motorcycles in my early years but now I'm automatic all the way.:)

Where I live it is really not worthwhile to have a manual tranny. I wouldn't mind it if I lived out in the midwest or something, but it's definitely not ideal in the metro area of NY.

My daughter took her driving test on a stick (75 Opel Manta). Blew the examiner's mind. Apparently she was the first with a stick shift in a couple of weeks.
When I first let her drive the S10 truck, I never knew she knew such language! She knew the gears, but the S10 had a weird clutch.

I'd much rather have one of those Google cars that drive themselves.

whenever im in boston i curse my standard every few seconds, I like to joke that my main workout is driving in stop and go traffic while driving stick. The clutch in my car having very little feel doesnt help either(its way too squishy :()

Got to thinking about the cars I've owned and they are, in the order of the graphic:

4 speed manual, 4 speed manual, auto
4 speed manual, 5 speed manual, auto
    auto, auto

    Also in order

top three - rear wheel drive
next two - front wheel drive
next two - 2 wheel rear/4 wheel (with lockout)
    Lastly - 2 wheel front/AWD

It depends on what I'm driving at the time. My Mustang, aka daily driver, has a 5-speed manual transmission... My Harley has a 6-speed... And the ole ladies truck has an automatic.

Standard. I've only owned 4 cars in my life, and 3 of them have been manual ('75 Datsun 710 wagon, '85 VW Golf, '00 Subaru IMpreza 2.5RS) and the only car I bought with an automatic ('91 Chevy Camaro), I spent the whole time I owned it wishing I had waited until I found a V8 with a manual. Automatics are just boring to drive.

It's pretty rare I crave to drive a manual now. Most of the time is when I want to go to the track and know I could get much better performance from a stick. That's pretty rare though.

Most of the time is commuting and I'm lazy. Luckily my car has tiptronic so I can downshift at my control either to engine brake or to get around someone or just when I'm bored of pure automatic.

Once I get my career going I'm sure the weekend warrior car will be a manual for sure. But my daily driver will probably always be an automatic with some sort of tiptronic since I'm lazy now.
