stock D3 slow to initiate phone call connection

My stock Droid 3 on Page Plus works very well, but has developed this problem when making phone calls. The phone responds as quickly as expected when doing anything until I do something that initiates a phone call. Then nothing happens for 10-15 seconds until finally the in-call screen pops up and the calling process begins.

The problem is the same whether I initiate the call from a widget, the dialer, recent calls or my contacts. Also, the phone doesn't freeze - I have actually given up on making a call and been sending a text instead when suddenly the in-call screen jumps up and starts making the call I abandoned 20 seconds ago.

I don't know if the same problem exists for incoming calls. I know of a single instance in the last two weeks where someone tried to call me but couldn't get through even though I was in good coverage, but that seems inconclusive.

Rebooting fixes the problem for about 10 minutes. That's not a solution, since it still means I'm waiting for my phone instead of talking on it.

Back when I used the D3 I used to restart the phone every day for just this reason.

What happens if you delete all of the calls from the call log? Does that help?

So far, rebooting twice a day has kept the problem away. Hopefully it will disappear when I custom ROM it. Thanks.

I can't remember if the ROM Minimoto runs on PagePlus, but, if you can get it running, I think that may be your best bet. It's definitely the leanest ROM around for the D3.

I just recently received a refurbished one through Best Buy through their GeekSquad warranty program. It has been doing this same thing, so I opted to do a Factory Data Reset and it seems to have made no difference. Been using the same apps on two previous Droid3's for the past couple years, so I have no reason to feel that there are any apps I'm using that is causing this.

Just today, I've made three phone calls and there was an 18 second, a 51 second and a 25 second delay between the moment I touched the 'call' icon and the screen changed and connected the call. Yesterday it took so long to respond that a couple times when I tried a second time, the first call had already connected and 3 minutes or so later, it connected the second call in the middle of being on the first one. So irritating.

If it continues, I'm just going to do another GeekSquad warranty replacement. I do a lot more texting than phone calls, but when I need to make a call, it's unreasonable to have a random 30-second-to-2-minute wait time before it even acknowledges that I did anything.

I hate to say this, because it's your money and not mine, but I really think it's time for a more modern phone. The D3 and 512 MB of RAM just won't cut it anymore. I'm thinking that Google Play Services has bulked up so much that it's probably consuming RAM, so this problem won't be getting any better.

I appreciate your input, but there's no reason for this Droid3 to have a delay in calling when my previous Droid3's did not, especially since I've been running the exact same apps on all three models for a couple years now. In fact, since I've got an OG Droid I use as an MP3 player in the car, I didn't download Google Play Music to the Droid3 because it was crapping up my Gallery with dead album artwork pics. If anything, this one should be running smoother than the previous ones if there was nothing junking up the Dialer app.

I don't want to go to a newer phone yet because I constantly use the slide-out keyboard for texting and surfing and the newer Droids are getting rid of that feature.

I'll give it another couple of days and then take it back to Best Buy if it's still doing it. Was just hoping for a simple software fix or edit that might take care of it.

    Thanks! :)

The fix is get a better phone.
You can try a custom rom like minimoto, but the Droid 3 never lived up to its specs.
Forums are full of threads like this.
And need to factory reset at least twice a year.
Reboot once a day or more.
If battery is 2 years old or more replace it, with a factory OEM replacement.
    The same with the charger.
