Help Stock email app showing old notifications

I use the stock email app for my corporate exchange email. Most everything works fine but after all emails are read and there are no notifications, when a new email arrives, the notifications will show that I have more than the one new message. It is showing that I have 9 new messages (or some number other that 1).
Also once the emails are read my laptop, the notifications don't go away on the phone (again showing more than 1 message).

Any suggestions?

I'm hardly an expert on mail, but I suspect it's probably a POP account, and not IMAP. If you can set it up as IMAP, you probably won't have those issues.

GoodSpike- Its set up under Microsoft Exchange Activesync so its neither POP or IMAP.

I've never used a Microsoft Exchange email service, so I don't know what the options are there. Sorry.
