Using a Sony Experia LT26i, with Android 4.1.2

Using Gmail app which works fine, ie syncs automatically and alerts when new mails arrive.

But on using the Email program to pickup Hotmail. I have to manually sync!
Does pickup my Hotmail correctly, I can read and view pictures etc.

Can anybody point me the right direction.

Manual sync is correct behavior. For automatic sync check out the dedicated Hotmail app.

In the past the app (the official app) developer in the Play Store was under "Microsoft + Seven" for hotmail. I think perhaps it is under Outlook.com now?

AFAIK hotmail and live accounts were switched over to the new Outlook.com

There are a number of other third-party apps that might work.
