Help stock sms app question

i searched and found nothing to answer my question which im sure many are capable of answering here. i got my droid x today and while i love the phone, im a little dissatisfied with the layout of an sms text. on the original droid, it was a straight threaded convo (like bbm, if you will)... and now its bubbles? while some may like that i like how the droid was... my question is, aside from installing an app for sms, is there any way to change this or did motorola make this unchangeable without the aid of an app? thanks!
