stop apps running

HI,

I have a sony Ericsson X8, I love it, just rooted it and put foyo on it.
so loving the app2sd functionality.

I use go launcher home screen, which I also love, it has running tab in the appdrawer that shows all running apps (as you'd imagine )

everytime I go here I see apps I haven't touched running. and I understand there is apps that need to run for certain reasons but I don't understand how or why 'network speed' etc.

Is the reason cetain apps like where's my droid run because they need to to function or call I just tell them somehow to not run?

They are supposed to be running in the background.
