does anyone know an easy way of stopping email sync when abroad?

i tested this recently when in guernsey:
went to settings> accounts and sync:
    turn off background data
    turn off auto-sync

but my other email accounts still continued to receive emails. the ones setup through the email app. hence data was still being used.

i don't want to switch data off completely, i want it to be there for when I need it, e.g. using google maps and the odd internet search here and there.

can anyone help me achieve this please?

hmm, i need to do this too, im going abroad for 2 weeks and i want to minimize data usage! i thought that turning off background/auto sync should do it too.. how about weather/news widgets etc? do they update as well?

Do you have "Data roaming" ticked?
    Menu>Settings>Wireless and network>Mobile networks

if you go into email, and sync schedule, you can change how often email syncs (push, every 15m, 30m, hour etc) - one of these options is never/manual

no, the weather widget doesn't update, neither does facebook or twitter etc. so that bit does what it says it will do. was hoping it would do email as well.

my only gripe with this is that I have to do it for each of my 4 email accounts. i'm hoping to find a sort of one-click option that will do it for me.

there is also a setting under here for "While roaming"
This can be set to "use sync schedule" or "manual"

yeah i was under the impression that turning off sync would do that for all apps, including email. if not, i guess as sydney mentioned, best to manually turn off sync for all ur email accounts

btw, how does a phone detect its on roaming? by the sim, i assume? so if i go abroad, and get a local sim.. it wont be on roaming, right

I just turn of data roaming, at the prices that are charged, its better not to download a thing.

It's amazing how much the battery life is extended!
