Is there a way to stop gifs in online poster from running automatically on my HTC 10?

Are they ads? Do they play in your browser? More information would help.

I'm thinking mostly of those in apps like facebook and tumblr. They seem to be uploaded just like any image but they take longer to load and run automatically. Images and text following in the same thread don't load until the gif finishes loading.

Seems I've seen settings in apps like facebook that allow you to shut off auto-loading.
