Help storage

I only have a few apps downloaded yet my phone says it is low on storage space. It causes me not to be able to open text msgs or emails. Even when I don't open an app have anything extra running or download anything new my storage space gets less I have cleared my cached and it doesn't seem to help. What is going on and how do I fix it so I can download more apps. Please help!!!
