Help stuck in safe mode and menu key not working

Hi Guys

I bought an xperia play yesterday from someone in the local paper but when i started playing around with it I noticed it still said safe mode at the bottom left of the screen?? I've tried updating the phone to the latest version and doing a hard reset but it still stays in safe mode? the menu key is also not responding when pressed. any help would be really apprieciated on this

Have you tried power cycling the phone? Also have you tried pressing and holding power and menu at the same time with the phone off?
