disclaimer: I am a complete android novice.

I obviously have a Samsung Galaxy S, as one would expect in this forum.
    I can not download any remotely recent apps, because I do not have Google Play. I still have "market" and when I did research to find out about that, I saw that Google Play was implemented with 2.2. I checked my firmware and I have 2.1-update1. The information I found trying to research this led me to Samsung Kies in order to get 2.2. When trying to use Kies, I get the error;

Reconnect the device in Samsung Kies (PC Studio) mode. Current connection mode not supported by Kies. Check USB settings. (Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging (x))

I did what this said (connected with USB debugging enabled as well as disabled) and I still get the same error with both.

I checked the FAQ and searched around a bunch of other forums looking for the answer to this problem, but either I can't find it or I'm too uninformed to know that I was looking at the answer. So sorry if I'm asking a dumb question.

I have not done anything special to this phone whatsoever.

    Thank You for any help

Edit: My Kies says it's fully updated

I'd download Odin from XDA and sidestep the whole process by flashing it yourself- it's very little effort. I avoided trying this for ages until Kies fowled up an update and I had no choice but it turned out to be easy and stress free.

Samsung Kies is what you seek.

    Try these steps

Restart both devices (especially the computer). Make sure your computer is connected to the internet, if Samsung Kies asks you to update then do so (but make sure you REBOOT after you DL Kies). Try again… if not proceed.

Try and pull that status bar down (the black bar where your battery life and signal strength is). Tap USB connected/settings and see if there is an option to connect to kies.

Try a different USB plug on the computer.

Try and uninstall ANY Samsung syncing software that might have been on the phone before Keis. Then uninstall and re-install Kies. Make sure the phone and the computer are not plugged into each other when you’re installing Kies. Wait until it prompts you to plug it in.

Does your phone recognize the computer enough to transfer information like pictures? Is it installing the drivers (should just allow you to plug the phone in and will auto install). Do you see a device is ready to use option in the bottom right of the computer??

Download your device drivers for your phone using Kies.

    Try a different computer.

This issue sucks. Let us know what happened.

Thank you for the help, but when I still could not get it to work, I just took it to the AT&T store and they fixed it all up for me.
