Suggestions on a replacement phone/plan?

So I recently destroyed my HTC One M8 by accidentally taking it snorkeling with me. Only being six months into my contract, I'm a long ways away from being eligible for an upgrade. I wrote to Verizon explaining what happened, admitting 100% fault, and asking if they'd be willing to help me out in order to keep me as a customer (considering that U.S. Cellular and Sprint are each willing to buy me out of my current contract and I could get new customer pricing that way). They offered to knock $200 off of the full retail price of the M8, S5, or G3, each of which is priced at $599.99 (they do not currently have any refurbished devices for these models). They also offered to let me spread out the payments for it over at least 3 months (possibly longer).

I'm grateful that Verizon is willing to do this for me, especially due to something that was entirely my own fault. Right now, although I previously had the M8, I'm leaning toward the S5 mainly because of its water-resistant feature and its camera. I considered waiting around for the Nexus 7, but it's just too damn big for me. Is there anything else that I should consider?

I'd still stick with the M8 unless you are willing to wait for the Nexus 6 and they are willing to give you the discount for that as well.

    Whoops! I meant Nexus 6 - not 7.

What do you like about the M8 over the S5?

Have you considered buying a used phone? Looks like Swappa has used M8, S5, and G3 phones on Verizon for less then $400.

Thanks for the suggestion, Kate. Those are some good prices, but I can't turn down a brand new one from Verizon for $399. :)

Because TouchWiz is hideous and also locked bootloader on Samsung...also the M8 is just physically and better phone in terms of hand feel and design. To each his own though...

I agree on the hand feel and appearance - the M8 is a slick-looking phone. I didn't know about the locked bootloader on the S5, though. Thanks for the info.

Well, after a lot of back-and-forth in my head, I ended up sticking with the M8. Thankfully, Verizon only recently posted "certified pre-owned" M8s (and S5s, for that matter) which saved me about $180. I'm happy to report that I have a fully-functional, new-looking M8 once again. :)
