Can anyone tell me
1) how to delete duplicate contacts
2) how to delete an old gmail accrual without losing all of the associated emails and contacts?

you could be getting duplicates from gmail and phone accounts. Facebook could be another source of duplicate contacts

click on people > menu > view and see if you have several entries checked in the options section.

as far as your other issue I have no clue. Sorry
