I do hiking and camping in areas that don't have Sprint network. I found out about Ting a while ago and decided to try it out.
With Ting, I get Verizon voice roaming, which does cover the areas I hike and camp in.
I don't get data roaming, but at least I can use the phone for calling and texting.

My wife wanted to jump on the Android bandwagon from her Tracfone, so we are using a shared Ting plan, starting today.
We ordered a couple refurbished, cheap phones from Ting, to try out their service. If we like it, we might eventually get better phones. If we don't like it, we go back to Virgin.

Btw, the phone I got from Ting is a feature phone, a military spec Kyocera DuraTX, I figured that's what I rather have out hiking, than an expensive but vulnerable smartphone.

I will keep my HTC EVO 4 V as a "pad", at home and elsewhere where there is wifi. Too bad I can't bring my EVO to Ting.

Our kids use texting and internet a lot, so they are better off staying with Virgin.

I will update here later on after using the Ting service for a while, with pros and cons.

One mistake I did was when my wife was playing with her new phone, she told me the phone wants to do a system update, and I told her, of course go ahead. later in the day I checked the data usage, and it was already past 250MB! I forgot to set up wi-fi on her phone :).

If you decide to try out Ting, I would really appreciate if you use my referral link: https://za09jj1h3d3.ting.com. It will save you money when you sign up, and it will also give me credit. I did the mistake of buyimg our phones from Ting, and finding out about the referral program afterwards, too late! So if you want to try Ting, use either mine, or someone elses referral link before you do anything, it will save you money

Edit: I also wanted to mention that originally I wanted to transfer my current number from Virgin, but to do that I would have to call VM for my account number (for porting purposes, it is NOT the same as your phone number), and I didn't feel like doing that. I will keep my VM active a couple weeks anyway. The online activation of the Ting phones was really quick and easy!

Welcome aboard! You can find some great deals on "portable" sprint phones on ebay or glyde.com.

I'd do ebay over gylde personally, seems there is quite a mark up on prices there.

The other bonus you get with Ting over Virgin, besides roaming on Verizon is customer service that in my experience is second to none. Hope your experience with Ting is as good as mine has been, I've been with them over a year now.

Their customer service is definitely unbelievable great! I emailed them about not getting the $25 credit for the phone purchase, and they responded quickly and gave me the credit :)

Hope you enjoy having Ting, I've been using it for over 6 months and wish I would have switched sooner. Sorry to hear about the data usage - the first thing I did was to turn off network data so all the updates went over WiFi.

Their referral program is nice, but I've had a tough time finding others to switch - best of luck in getting some :)

I've been able to sign up one person as well. :) Many people are interested in Ting, especially with the $25 discount, but most haven't made the move.

For anyone wondering, you can save $25 off cell phone service by using this Ting link when you sign up:

    $25 off Ting referral link.

Stick it in your forum signature like I have..
I am in my 13th month with ting and have had 10 referrals, and a single referral pays my bill, I'm currently paid up for the rest of the year ;)

Well, been on Ting for a month now, together with my wife. Our first bill will be $41. Not bad for two phones :)

As I mentioned earlier, I started with a Kyocera DuraXT feature phone, but it didn't take long before I started craving for a smartphone, so I went ahead a got a HTC EVO 3D from eBay (same phone as I had on Virgin Mobile).

I did add my referral link to my signature, hopefully I get at least someone using it. Although I hate to "spam", but gotta do something!

Another great thing is, since I have the rugged feature phone, and the smartphone, I can switch between them as I please, just activate the phone online. That way if I go hiking or camping, I can take the feature phone, and then switch back when I get back home

It's not really spam if you signature is attached to useful posts though.
It's only spam if you are posting crap, single word posts e.t.c.. everywhere.
